The author's father, a difficult, distant parent, owned an acre of land in Yorkshire, built a mysterious war memorial there, and had a passionate, lifelong attachmen to it. After his death, the author, in an attempt to understand her father better and his attachment to the place, set out to explore it and its history. She discovered that it had been home to Neolithic forts, farmed by the monks from nearby Byland Abbey, and fought over by medieval Scots.
